Opertions Manager exam 70-400

June 17, 2008 · Filed Under Certification, Operations Manager · Comment

I took the 70-400, MCTS: Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007, Configuring exam last week.  I don’t think I was overly prepared or super heavy on Ops Mgr, I just think the exam was pretty basic…but still covered all relevant items you’d need to know to be able to implement, maintain and support an Operations Manager 2007 environment.

Without getting into any detail, or violating the NDA, I’ll just say that if you’ve had the opportunity to attend the Microsoft Workshop for Operations Manager (3 day class) as a Premier Support customer, then you’ll be ready to take the exam as long as you’ve got a few months usage under your belt.  There were really no surprises to be found as far as topics covered or even how the questions were presented.  Best bets for preparation are to work with the product, read the deployment and design documents thoroughly and try out every feature you can with the product (ACS, client monitoring, reporting, custom management packs, overrides, etc.)

I passed with a 920, which was somewhat of a surprise…I figured on a pass, but maybe a bit lower in the 800 range.  Ah well, a pass is a pass regardless.  So, I guess that brings the MCTS total up to six now, which is kind of strange to have six MCTS certifications and four MCITP certifications after just having MCSE (and later MCSA) for so many years.
